1 – Update your browser
first and most important thing for safe browsing is to update your browser because keeping malicious file is no longer a cyber criminal’s only invitation to access your PC. IN hacking contest known as Pwn2Own in march, contestants were able to compromise Apple’s safari browser in just minutes, while no one managed to exploit Google Chrome browser, even after several days.
2 – Update your browser plug-ins
Just as important as keeping your browser immunized is updating the programs that run within the browser, plug in like adobe flash. These programs can offer a path from the web to your PC’s vital just as quick as flaws in your browser. In fact, cybercriminals often set booby-trapped sites to try exploits using vulnerabilities in several different programs in the hopes one will work.
3 – Don’t trust your friend
In April several ripped through Twitter and spread from one account to another, sending messages seemingly authored by users;s friends. So far, those contagions have been mere experiments by young hackers trying to embarrass the site’s administrators. But true cybercriminal worms are no doubt in the works. Given that spammers and cybercriminals have compromised Facebok and Myspace just as often.
4 – Check your DNS
The domain name system acts as the web’s directory assistance, converting names of the web site in to the Ip addresses where they are hosted. But in august of last year, cyber security researcher Dan Kaminsky showed how that address system can be easily hacked to send user to look-a-like sites bent on stealing financial information or installing malicious software.
5 – Check site SSL certification
the padlock icon on your browser doesn’t mean as much as it used to. For the past several years, hackers have been coming up with various tricks for spoofing secure socket layer certification. the system that assures that secure sites are secure by displaying that icon. A site bar glows green to indicate it’s safe.
6 – Block address
Dynamic ads, like the rest of the website that are becoming more dynamic and gaining access to more of your PC’s resources then ever. IN other words if the site your are visiting is not secretly planting malicious software on your machine, its ads might be. the safest way to protect against that threat is to simply block plus does the trick. More pleasant option is Add-Art ( http://addd-art.org), which replaces ads with works from features artists–both prettier and safer then the average banner ad. Another way to block any site is manual blocking Block any site manually
7 – Block script
One of the most common avenues for exploitation on the web are scripts, programs that run automatically on the web pages through plug-ins. Many cybersecurity researchers recommend turning off java script, for instance, to prevent those programs from grabbing your PC. But a dafter tool might be Fire fox’s No-script plug-in, which allows you to choose which sites should and should not be allowed to run scripts when you visit them.
8 – Maintain your anti virus software
If a malicious file manages to by pass all your other safeguards and install it self on your computer, anti virus protection may be your last line of defense. Keep it updated to filter out the latest round of files identified as unsavory. Or you need to learn at least how to run a PC without anti virus software
9 – Use two browser
Some web attacks, such as cross site scripting and cross site request forgery, are designed to steal “cookies” the tracking files downloading to your browser by the site you visit. Those script can give cybercriminals access to every site you have recently visited with the same browser.
10 – Assume your email is insecure
Another rule that falls in the possibly paranoid category: avoid using web-based email services to send or store any important data. Heremiah Grossman, a web security researcher with the firm white hat security, cautions that every web mail service, including yahoo and Gmail is subject to occasional security lapses that can jeopardize users data.

You can also generate money from your website. Now the easiest and hottest internet marketing method is by using google adsense.
Tutorial to Hide visited websites from others
We search for lots of information on the internet. But it is not necessary that others know about this. Whenever you visit any website this information is captured and stored in your computer in the form of ‘cache’, ‘cookie’, ‘history’, and ‘windows registry’. There is a danger due to this. Whoever uses the same computer after you have used can find out which websites you have been visiting. If you have a personal computer that no one else will ever use, then you don’t have to worry much about this. But if your home or office computer is shared then you better clear this history. In this tutorial let us see how to completely remove the recently visited websites from your computer.
- Cache FolderEvery time you visit a website, every browser has the functionality to store the images, websites, urls etc in your hard disk somewhere in the temporary folders. This is useful to save bandwidth. When you visit the same website again, instead of downloading all the images again, the browser will retrieve them from the temporary folders from your hard disks and therefore increasing the speed and saving internet bandwidth. So when you finish browsing you can clear these temporary folders. This temporary folder is usually referred to as Cache. The exact location of this folder will differ based on the browser you are using. For instance if you use Internet explorer then this cache is located in the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ folder under your c:\Windows folder.
You can either delete from this folder or you can delete it from your browser. Goto Tools-> Internet Options. Under the General tab click ‘Delete Files’ button. - HistoryAll the browsers also store the urls of every website you visit. This is used to show the address of the site on the ‘Address Bar’ when you start typing the first few letters of the websited address, the browser will take from the history and prompt you for the full address. This makes your job easier so that you need not type the full address every time. But if you want to hide the sites you visit then you have to remove this history also. Internet explorer stores this history in a folder called ‘History’ under c:\Windows folder.Or you can delete history from your browser. Goto Tools-> Internet OPtions. Select the ‘General’ tab and click on ‘Clear History’ button. In the confirmation dialog box select ‘OK’. This will clear your history.
- CookiesWhenever you visit websites, some information about you and some information about that website is stored in your computer’s hard disk. When you visit the same site again, the information stored in this cookie file will be read to identify you. This is especially useful for sites that can personlize the site for you and displays messages such as ‘welcome your_name’ etc. But this cookie also stores the name of the site you visit so you should also delete these cookies if you want to hide the sites you visited. To delete cookies, goto Tools->Internet Options. And click on ‘Delete Cookies’ button. Or you can choose the security tab and click on ‘Custom Level’ button to disable or enable cookies.
- RegistryAnother place in which the websites you visited are stored is the windows registry. It is not advisible to modify registries if you are not sure how to use them. Only those who are confident and willing to take risk should touch the registry. Click on ‘Start->Run’ and type ‘regedit’ and press enter. The windows registry will open. Now click on ‘Edit->find’ and type ‘URL History’. In the right hand side you can see a list of website addresses that you visited. You can select them one by one and delete them. programs, viruses and hackers.
Beware of downloading skins and themes from internet
Is it safe to download skin and themes for my computer?
What is a skin? What is a Theme?
Skin is s most often used word by computer users. You may wonder what can be the relation between a computer and skin? What is the meaning of Skin. Now what is the literal meaning of skin. Skin is used to cover our body. Isn’t it? Similarly, the term skin in computer is used to refer to the interface or look and feel of any program or application. There are many skins available in the internet that can be downloaded freely.
For instance, some popular media players such as WinAmp, Music Match, Real One or Windows media player have many skins provided by third parties. There are many ways you can download these skins and use it in your computer. In any windows software, from the menu choose ‘Options’ or ‘Preferences’. There you may find the option to ‘Change Skin’ or ‘Change theme’. Not all software will have this feature. If the software has this feature to change skin or theme then you can download your favorite skin or theme and apply it on your software.
For example, if you use Netscape version 6 or higher then select ‘View’ and click on ‘Apply theme’ and ‘Get New themes’. This will bring you to the ‘Theme park’. Here you will see many different skins and themes that can be downloaded. Once downloaded you can apply it to your Netscape software and the whole look and feel will change to the new theme.
But beware of one thing. When you download these free skins and themes from internet, the skin developer may embed the ’spyware or adware’ in these skins to spy on your activities or to steal your personal particulars. For example a company that provides skins namely hot bar, openly states in its website that if you download skins from their website they will monitor the which websites you visit, which search engines you use and other details. Just for the sake of a skin, are you willing to share your personal details. Not only that, they will also show advertisements in your computer. Another such company is Neo Planet. In their website they declare that those who download and use their skins, their emails and browsing habits will be collected and shared with their partner companies. These partner companies who get your personal data will then send you SPAM emails selling and advertising their products.
In this world nothing comes free. How can someone give you skins and themes free after spending so much of their time on programming and developing the skin. Who will pay for their programming effort. Their only way to get money is to gather your personal details and sell it to companies.
Therefore, be very cautious and careful while downloading these skins to your computer.
How to Prevent Adware / Spyware?
Are you a frequent Internet user? Do you download and use many free software and applications from internet? If YES, then be aware that your information may be stolen without your knowledge. Understand that those information that you willingly give may be sold to third parties.
Programs capture your personal information
Most of the free programs and software that you download from internet fall under any of the following Categories; Shareware, Demoware, Freeware or Adware. Among these Adware is usually the most doubtful and dangerous program. Adware stands for Advertisement + Software. Hence, if you install a downloaded program that is an ‘Adware’ then you will see many advertisements on your computer. And your personal information will be sent to these advertising companies by this adware automatically.
When you install these adware software it will bring you to that company’s website to register with your personal information before you can use the software. This is called ‘Registration for software activation’. To activate such software you HAVE to give your personal particulars. This information that you submit to such companies will be later sold to third parties.
Your information is stolen through websites:
Many websites and programs that you download and install will monitor your activities when you are connected to the internet. For example, details like which websites you frequently access and which links you click. Based on this collected information you will be judged and categorised and you will be sent SPAM emails that target your interest.
A frequent trick used by these softwares it to show a 1×1 pixel GIF image which is invisible to your eyes. But this GIF file will contain Scripting Code that does all these spying activities.
How to prevent spyware and Adware?
Some wrongly think that they do not have any valuable information about them and therefore do not need to worry about their information being stolen. Even your email address is a very important piece of information to these thieves. They will sell this email address to third parties who will send you SPAM emails. So instead of receiving hundreds of SPAM emails daily, you can try to prevent this from happening. Isn’t it?
Download and install an ‘Adware Remover’ software in your computer. You can use Lavasoft software in your computer. Lavasoft’s ‘Ad-Aware’ is a popular adware removal software which can be downloaded from www.lavasoftusa.com .
Install a Firewall in your computer. If you have a single computer, then a software firewall is sufficient to protect your computer. Many companies sell software firewalls. But you do not need sophisticated firewall. You can download and install a free firewall, Zone Alarm from the website www.zonelabs.com .
How to prevent stealing of passwords and credit card details?
We use internet for many purposes. In many websites we use different login names and passwords. For example, if you use any of the free web emails such as gmail, yahoo or hotmail then you will have to login with your login name and password before accessing your email inbox.
Similarly, if you use any commercial websites for internet shopping such as Amazon or eBay then you may have to use your credit card details before buying online. Only then can you buy online. If we lose credit card related information then we may lose money. If this information falls into the hands of hackers then we are seriously at danger of losing money. This hacker can then use your credit card details to buy anything.
Worse still, if someone uses your login name and password to login to a server and carries out any destructive activities then you will be blamed for that activity. Court trial or penalties or fine may make your life miserable.
The password, credit card details can be stolen from three places.
From your computer, when you type in your browser these key strokes can be captured
Or while this information packets are transmitted from your computer to the server. This is called ‘Wiretapping’. Hackers and crackers can easily accomplish this.
From the web server’s database. In this database, like your data, many people’s information will be stored. If the hacker gains access to these databases then he can get these data.
Of these, the first and the second method of stealing can be prevented by you. The third way of stealing from web server, is not in your hands and you can not do anything to prevent it. Let us see how you can prevent the first two methods of stealing.
The login name, password and credit card details that you type in your browser are sent as text via internet to the web servers. The hackers and crackers can easily read this text. They cannot read it if it is encrypted. This is where Secure Sockets Layers are used.
Whether the web server that you are connecting to, uses SSL to encrypt the data can be found from your browser. For example a ‘closed lock’ icon will be displayed in the status bar of your browser. If there is not clocl icon in the status bar then those websites do not use SSL and therefore not secure.
In your ‘Internet Explorer’ choose ‘Tools-Internet Options’. In this new dialog box select the ‘Advanced’ tab. Here, you will see many check boxes under the security section. 1. Use SSL 2.0. 2.Dont save encrypted pages to disk 3. warn if form submitted is being redirected 4. warn if changing between secure and not secure mode. 5. check for server certificated relocation 6. warn about invalid site certificates. See that all these six options are selected.
From now on, the browser will prompt your, whenever you enter/view websites whether that page is secure, and when you type any details, whether the data is encrypted or not.
In login pages, when you key in the first two or three letters of your username, Internet explorer will auto complete the username and password to make it easier for you. But this feature can be a problem if many people are using the same computer. Others may enter into your account just by typing the username and without even knowing your password. So it is better to ‘TURN OFF’, ‘Auto Complete’ feature. To do this, select ‘Tools-Internet Options’. Choose the ‘Content’ tab and click the ‘Auto complete’ button. Click on the ‘Clear passwords’ button and delete all the stored passwords. If the ‘Usernames and passwords on forms’ check box is selected then de select it.
Also clear all the cache files from your browser. To do this select ‘Tools-Internet Options’. Select the ‘General’ tab. In the ‘Temporary internet files’ section click the ‘Delete Files’ button. Now click on ‘Yes’ and ‘OK’.
Congratulations, now you have reduced the possibility of your passwords to be stolen.
Netscape Vs Internet Explorer – Netscape Navigator features
Netscape is the company which developed the famous Netscape Browser. Before Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was introduced, Netscape’s browser was the most popular browser in the market. The Software is called ‘Netscape Communicator’ and it contains, Netscape Navigator (browser), Netscape Mail (Email client), Netscape Composer (Webpage editor), AOL (instant messenger) and Radio netscape (Radio station software).
Even today Netscape navigator browser is widely used. However, it lost to Microsoft on the browser software war, and not it gives Mozilla browser engine free.
Netscape Navigator has many features that are not in Internet Explorer. So you can download Netscape Navigator formwww.netscape.com and try it on your computer. Here we will discuss the features in Netscape Navigator version 7.0 and higher.
Netscape Vs Internet Explorer
In Microsoft Internet Explorer, if you are viewing a website then the window’s button will be visible in the task bar. If you press Ctrl + N or File->New Window you can open a new window of internet explorer and you can view some other website in this new window. Now the button for this window will also be visible in the task bar below. Likewise if you open 10 windows you will see 10 buttons in the task bar. This is very troublesome. To switch between different websites is very difficult.
But in Netscape Navigator, no matter how many websites you open you will only see one window in the task bar. Each website will be opened in a new tab, within the same window. So switching between websites is very easy in Netscape navigator.
If you open a new window in Internet Explorer, the same website will be opened in the new window. This may make the loading slower. In Netscape if you open a new window a ‘blank website’ will be open making the loading time faster.
In Netscape Navigator, you can create a single bookmark for many websites. For example you are viewing mails in one Tab, and reading news in another tab while hearing to radio in another tab, you can create a single bookmark that is connected to all these three websites. So the next time you click on this bookmark all these three websites will be opened.
To make download faster
Netscape navigator has a ‘Download Manager‘. A single file if it is too big can be downloaded from many websites and consolidated by download manager to make the downloading faster.
If the download stops or disconnects in between then you can resume the download from the place where it was stopped instead of starting the download from the beginning.
Other features in Netscape Navigator
- Like other browsers, Netscape also has the ‘search‘ feature. An added search feature is to find related websites. For example you are viewing a website. On this website you can select a word or words and then right click and choose ‘Web search’. This will result in finding other web pages with the selected words.
- Netscape Navigator also has cookie manager, password manager and form manager.
- You can also compress a webpage in to a A4 size paper and print it.
- The ‘Mail Alert’ feature in Netscape Navigator alerts you when you receive a new email.
- Netscape composer, has the ‘Publish’ button. You can use this feature to publish all the webpages you have created all at once.
- You can use the AOL instant messenger to chat, share files etc.
What is Firefox? A tutorial on Firefox
Majority of the Internet users use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to browse the web. Internet Explorer (IE) is the entry point to most of the security problems in Windows. There are many security holes in IE, therefore Microsoft releases security patches evey now and then to fix these security holes.
Consider you are entering any website using IE. Even without clicking on any link or image on that webpage it is possible that your computer is infected by a spyware. Hackers can use these security holes to install vspyware in the computer without you doing anything on the webpage.
Not only spyware, Pop up Adware, Home Page Hijacking are some of the other common problems in Internet Explorer. It is true that if you update your windows frequently, you can fix these holes and keep your computer safe.
To escape from all the problems identified above, you can start using the free Firefox browser. Another reason for using Firefox is that Microsoft has announced it will not release any security patches for Internet explorer for Windows 95, 98, 98 SE and ME users. Security patches for Internet explorer will be released only for the Windows XP users.
Firefox is a free internet browser provided by Mozilla, which can be downloaded from here.
How to install Firefox browser?
As mentioned above, download the installation file. Close all the windows applications especially the Internet Explorer windows. Now locate the downloaded firefox executable file and double click. The Firefox installation wizard will run. Just follow the steps and install the Firefox browser.
You can also import all your preferences and favourites from your Internet explorer settings to your Firefox browser. The ‘favourites’ in IE is called as ‘Bookmarks’ in Firefox.
Not only favourites, you can also bring History, Passwords etc from your Internet explorer to your firefox. For this, during the installation of Firefox, the ‘Import Wizard’ will ask you whether you want to import all your IE settings to firefox, if you choose ‘Yes’ then just follow what the wizard shows.
How to use Firefox?
Just like Internet Explorer, Firfox is a web browser. Hence you can use it very easily. However there are some differences between internet explorer and firefox. To read more about firefox you can access this pagewww.mozilla.org/products/firefox/index.html .
To download IE View software in Firefox
With firefox you can enter any website in the Internet. However some websites are specifically created for IE and support only Internet Explorer. Especially, Microsoft’s ‘Windows Update’ or ‘Encarta’ sites support Internet Explorer browser only. You cannot do windows update using Firefox browser unless you download IE View software.
There is a way to cheat websites that need Internet Explorer browser. We can make firefox show itself as IE to these websites and access them successfully. IE View software developed by Paul Roub can do this. You can download IE View freely at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/35/
Now to use IE View, just view the webpage normally in firefox. Right click on that page and select ‘View this page in IE’ option for IE targeted sites.

Calculator in Google
If you are an Internet user, then you may have already used Google search engine. Google is not a mere search engine any more. Google provides many services free of charge to its users. In addition to being a search engine it provides many solutions and answers to many questions. One such value added service is the calculator in google.
You may have used your windows calculator from ‘Accessories’ for your calculations. This windows calculator can be used to solve simple arithmetic problems. In this calculator you can select ‘View->Scientific’ option to perform more complex operations such as log, sin, sum etc. But if you have questions such as 1 mile equals how many kilometers, 10 KG equals how many pounds or what is the celcius value of 18.6 Farenheit then, even this scientific calculator will not be of any help.
You can use google’s calculator to answer these questions mentioned above as well as any other similar questions. Google’s calculator can be used for simple, scientific calculations as well as for convertions.
Here are some examples and tips on how to use the google’s calculator. First of all open the homepage of google.http://www.google.com . You can get the answers for your mathematical equations in the search box.
- Type 3+4 in the search box and click on ‘Search’ button. Immediately you will see a calculator icon and the answer 3+4=7
- +,-,/ and * keys represent addition, subtraction, division and multiplication respectively. For example you can key in 5+2*3 and click on search button to get the answer as 11.
- You can also use the ^ key as the power symbol and the % symbol for percentage. If you type 2^10 then the answer will be 1024 which is number 2 multiplied ten times.
- You can also use sqrt, sin, cos, tan, log, lm etc in google calculator search box. For example try the following log(200),sqrt(4),sin(45 degrees) etc.
- You can also convert a number from one numbering format to another. Some of the the numbering formats are binary, decimal, octal and hexadecimal. As far as google is concerned binary is represented by 0b, octal is represented by 0o and hexa decimal is represented by 0x. If you remember these then you can easily convert from one format to another. You can test this using the following examples. 54 to binary, 123 to hex, 0b110010 to octal,0×789 to binary, 0×1234 in roman numerals.
- You can also do conversions. For example, try the following phrases. 5 kilometers in miles, “2 miles in kilometers”,”100 degrees f in celcius”, “One hour in seconds”, “One decade in minutes”.
You can get more details about google’s calculator at http://www.google.com.sg/help/features.html#calculator

Whether you can hear a particular radio station depends on the distance between your radio station and your radio. Therefore you are limited to hearing only a few radio stations.
In contrast you can hear hundreds of radio stations through internet. The distance doesn’t matter any more. Just by a click you can change from one station to another station and you can hear 24 hours.
Types of internet radio
There are two types of internet radio.
- Radio Station which requires a Player
- Radio station which doesn’t require a player.
Player is nothing but an audio software and many players are available. Among them there are a few which can download the programmes from the radio station and play it in your computer. You have to download these players and install them. Then you can start these players and goto the URL of the radio station and hear it.
There are also a few radio stations that do not require a player to listen to it. In these stations you just goto their website and then click on the link to star hearing the radio.

Which Internet Connection plan to choose?
Internet has become part and parcel of our lives. Not only for individuals but even for a country’s economic growth, scientific growth, organizations’ success, Internet is very essential. The companies that offer these internet connections are called ISPs (Internet Service Providers). These ISPs offer many different internet connection plans. How to select the best connection plan for home use or for offices? The following tips will give you an overview of different types of internet connections, their advantages and disadvantages.
PSTN Dialup
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) dialup uses your phone connection to connect your computer to the internet. You need a modem, phone line and a computer for a PSTN dial up connection.
Advantages of PSTN dial up
- This is the basic internet connection and all the ISPs provide this type of dial up.
- To install PSTN dialup and to use it is very cheap and affordable.
Disadvantages of PSTN dial up
- The speed of a typical PSTN modem is 56KBPS. Therefore the speed of the internet connection will be slower than this.
- During the time you are connected to the internet, you have to pay the telephone charges.
- While you are connected to the internet you cannot use your telephone to call anyone because you are using that phone line for connecting to the internet. You also will not receive any calls from outside during this time.
ISDN dialup
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) dialup uses a higher end digital telephone line to dial up. To use this type of connection you need ISDN telephone line, computer and a ‘Terminal Adapter’.
Advantages of an ISDN dialup
- While you are connected to internet using ISDN dialup connection you can use your ISDN phone to make phone calls simultaneously.
- When you are making phone calls while connected to the internet then the speed of internet will be 64KBPS.
- If you are using the ISDN phone line just for internet then the speed of internet will be 128KBPS.
Disadvantages of ISDN dialup
- Not every place has ISDN connection.
- Even if your place has this facility, it is expensive to get an ISDN dialup connection from your ISP.
- Not all the ISPs provide ISDN dialup plan.
Leased Line Internet Plan
In both ISDN dialup and PSTN dialup you need to dial up from your computer before getting connected to the internet. And you close this connection when you no longer need internet connection. If you need a continuous connection 24 hours of the day and 7 days a week then you need a ‘Leased Line’ also known as ‘dedicated line’. This type of permanent connection is called ‘Always On’.
Advantages of Leased Line
- You get ‘Always on’ connection 24 hours every day.
- The speed of the internet ranges from 2.4 KBPS to 2G based on your subscription.
Disadvantages of Leased Line
- The disadvantages of a leased line is that it is very expensive.
- Since your computer is always connected to the internet your computer is exposed to many vulnerabilities such as viruses and spywares. So you may need to secure your computer using firewall and Antivirus software
DSL
- Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) also uses a normal PSTN phone line. But using DSL you can use both internet and phone simultaneously. Therefore many prefer DSL to PSTN dial up.
Advantages of DSL
- The speed of DSL connection is fast. 64 KBPS, 512 KBPS, 1.5MBPS and higher speed can be achieved in DSL connections.
- DSL also provides ‘Always On’ connection 24 hours a day always.
- You can also use your phone while using internet
Disadvantages of DSL
- More expensive
- You need an ADSL modem to connect but the distance between this modem and your computer cannot be more than 18,000 feet.
Downloading files and programs from internet
When you are browsing the internet, you stumble upon a program, shareware or freeware that you would like to download and install on your computer. Just follow these steps to do that.
- First bring the cursor on top of the file or program that you wish to download. The arrow cursor will turn from ‘arrow’ to a ‘hand’. Then click on that place.
- Then, click on ‘Save’ or ‘Save to disk’. You will be prompted to select the location in your computer harddisk where you would like to store this file. A good practice is to make a folder in your C drive with the name ‘downloads’ and then use this folder for all your downloaded files and programs. Otherwise, you can choose your desktop as the destination, so that when the download is finished you can easily locate the file from your desktop.
- Now the file will start downloading. While it is being downloaded a small dialog box with the title ‘Saving Location’ will show the % of the file that is already downloaded. Once it is fully downloaded the dialog box will show ‘Download completed’. You will also get a ‘Beep’ sound.
- Once the download is complete, you can click on the ‘open’ button on the ‘download competed’ dialog box.4.1 If the file you downloaded is an .EXE (Executable) file then the application will install itself on the computer.
4.1 If it is a .zip file then the WinZip program will open the file with its contents. In this case you can extract all these files to any of your local folders and then look for an .EXE program such as install.exe or setup.exe and double click on it install the application.
What is IP Address? What is DNS?
For one computer to connect to another computer and transfer information, the IP address of that computer should be known. This IP Address is made of numbers. The 32 Bit IP address is divided into 4 sections of 8 bits each separted by a ‘.’ (dot). Each 8 bit is called an Octet. The value of each Octet will vary between 0 to 255.
For example, 203.116.56.34 is an IP address. As you can see there are four sections each separated by a dot.
Name Vs Number
If someone asks you whose phone number is 98343453 you may not know it. But instead if someone asks you whether you know ‘John peters’ immediately you will remember your friend. The reason is names are easier to remember than numbers. This is human nature.
In internet, there is a need to connect to a lot of different computers daily. If you have to remember the IP address of each computer in the internet, it is impossible. Because IP Address is made of numbers.
That’s why, computer scientists decided to give a name to each of these IP addresses. These computer names that represent IP addresses are called ‘Domain Names’. For example, www.yahoo.com is a domain name. It is easy to remember a name. Isn’t it?
Every computer that connects to the internet has a unique IP Address. Most of the computers especially servers will have a domain name.
DNS – Domain Name System
If you need to connect to a computer in the internet, you can use the IP address of that computer or the Domain Name of that computer.
But the computers need just the IP addresses. For our own convenience we use domain names. Therefore when we use the domain name, for example www.yahoo.com, our computer will first find out the IP address of this domain name and then uses the IP address to connect to it.
Let us assume that the IP address of the computer that you want to connect to is 123.232.231.132 and the domain name of this computer is www.xyz.com .
Now you connect to Internet, open your browser and key in the IP address 123.232.231.132 in the address bar and ‘Enter’. The browser will immediately connect to the computer because the computer knows how to use the IP address.
Now imagine that you typed the domain name www.xyz.com instead of the IP address in the browser. What the computer needs is the IP address not the domain name. Therefore the browser will try to find the IP address for the domain www.xyz.com . For this purpose it will contact the DNS (Domain Name System) server. The DNS server will find the IP address of that domain and will return the IP address to your browser. Then your computer will use that IP address to connect to that computer.
If you type the IP address, the browser will access that site immediately. If you type the domain name, there will be slight delay because the browser has to connect to DNS server first to determine the IP address. If for some reasons this DNS server is down or there is not DNS entry for that domain, then that domain name or website address will not be accessible.
What is downloading, uploading, installing?
Downloading, uploading and installing are some of the frequently used terms in computers and Internet. For computer and Internet newbie, these terms are puzzling and intrigues them. Here we will see what these terms mean.
Downloading
Downloading refers to bringing a file from a computer in the Internet to your own computer and copying it there. Many websites have this facility. When you are viewing websites in your browser, just bring your cursor on top of links (usually links are in blue color underlined text) , the cursor will now transform into a hand. If this link is pointing to another webpage then clicking on this link will bring you to the page the link is poiting to. But instead of pointing to another webpage if that link is pointing to a file in that server then by clicking on it, you will see a ‘Save As’ dialog box. In this dialog box, you can select the folder in your computer where you want to save the file and click on ‘OK’. Now a small ‘File Download’ box will open and you can see a progress bar showing the file you selected being downloaded to the selected folder. Once the file is fully downloaded to your computer you can start using that file.
Uploading
Uploading is just the opposite of downloading. Uploading refers to the transfer of a file from your computer’s hard disk to another computer in the internet or network. Generally this is done using an FTP client (File Transfer Protocol). But some websites allow you to upload using the internet browser. For example when you send emails using webmails such as yahoo or gmail, if you want to attach a file to the email then this is done using the browser. This is also called uploading.
Installing
Some get confused with the term Installing with Downloading. Take for instance you want to use a free software that is available somewhere in Internet. In order to use that software, you need to download the program file from internet and store it locally in your computer. But just saving to you computer is not enough. You will have to install it in your computer by running the setup.exe or install.exe file that you downloaded. Once you double click on the exe file that you downloaded the installation wizard will start and you can follow the instructions provided in the wizard to install the program and then start using it.
A tutorial on cookies
Literally, a ‘Cookie‘ is referred to biscuits. But in computers, a Cookie has a different meaning. Even those who know about it, think that cookies cause damage to the computer. In this article let us learn about cookies and their usage.
What is a Cookie?
Cookie is a text file created by the webserver and stored in our computer. Let us see what is the purpose of this text file.
Generally when a client computer connects to a server they both get introduced and start sharing information. The server will identify the computer and this relationship will continue until the connection gets discontinued.
But the connection between the web server and a client computer is ’stateless’. After serving the information that the web client requested, if the same client sends another request, then the web server will not know that it is the same person. Instead it will treat is as a new person and serve the information. Cookie is used to change this ’statelessness’ in the web server.
With the use of cookies, when a web client connects to a web server, the web server will create a cookie file and write some information about the web client and store it in the web client computer itself. When the same web client connects to the web server next time, the web server will see the cookie file in that computer and will know about the client.
Why to use a cookie?
Personally there is no use of storing the cookie in our computer. But it helps the web server a lot. Web servers creates cookies for two main reasons.
- To identify the visitorsA server will normally write details like when did the visitor visit the website, which are the pages he viewed, what is his name etc in a cookie. When the same person visits the same website again, the server will display his name and welcome him, and show those webpages related to his previous visit and also show the changes since his last visit to the website. In short, cookies are used to personalize the website for the visitors.
- To record activitiesCookie is also used to record the activities between the web client and the web server and used to rectify problems that may occur during the session. For example, imagine that you are filling out a form with many fields. After filling the first page and moving to the second page if the computer hangs and you had to restart the computer. Then if you restart and go back to the same webpage, the webserver will know the details that you already entered from the cookie and hence will just show the second page directly. If there was no cookie then you will have to type from the first page again.
Common Myths about cookies.
- Cookies spread viruses. This is a false statement. Cookie is a text file, therefore virus cannot spread through viruses.
- Cookies get stored in any folder in the computer. This is also false. Cookies are also stored in a specific folder only. For example in c:\windows\profiles\yourname\cookies folder, Internet Explorer creates one text file for each cookie. Netscape navigator will store all cookies in c:\Program files\netscape\users 50\default\cookies.txt file.
- Using cookies, the other files in your computer can be read. This also is false. Websites just read their own cookies and do not read other cookies or other files.
- From other cookies webserver will know which websites you visit. This is also false. A website will only open its own cookies. It will not read other cookies.
- You can’t read a cookie. This is also false. Cookie is just a text file. You can read cookies using any text editor like notepad.
How to read a cookie file?
You can use a software like ‘Cookies Cruncher’ to read cookies. You can download cookies cruncher fromwww.rbaworld.com
In Netscape navigator all the cookies are stored in a single file. You can read it using Netscape navigator. Select ‘Edit->Preferences’ and click on ‘Privacy & Security’ and select ‘Cookies’. Now click on ‘Manage Stored Cookies’.
What is a browser toolbar?
Internet is full of free and quality information. But the main problem that internet users face is in finding the right and relevant information. The search engines are meant for just that. To find the information we want based on our search terms. You can goto www.goole.com or www.yahoo.com and key in your key words to search.
Why to enter into a search engine website? What if you can bring the search engine into your browser and keep it there permanently and you can use it whenever you want. In order to bring the search engine as part of the browsers, many search engines provide toolbars. You can download any of these toolbars and install it in your browser.
If you are viewing any webpages in your browser and you want to search for some information, then you can just type your search term in the toolbar in your browser and directly start the search.
Toolbars are available almost for all browsers. Here will see some of the toolbars available for Internet Explorer.

- Alexa ToolbarYou can download Alexa toolbar from www.alexa.comThe specially of the alexa toolbar is the traffic ranking. When you visit any website, the alexa toolbar will display the traffic rank of that website. The Alexa toolbar will also display the links to websites related to the website you are currently viewing.
How to download free Bit Torrent software?
Transferring files in Internet is one of the many facilities Internet provides us. You may be aware that files can be downloaded using HTTP or FTP. Now you can use the ‘Bit Torrent’ protocol to send and receive files.
Bit Torrent protocol functions in a peer-to-peer method. One person can enter into another person’s computer and send are receive files. That is why this type of computers are called ‘Peer’s. But there is a server required to make all these computers work together. This server is called ‘Tracker’.
The tracker just monitors the connections between the peers. Other than that the tracker does not know which files are being transferred between peer computers. Therefore the tracker needs a very little bandwidth to monitor a huge number of peers.
When someone uploads a file from his computer to another computer, he can also download a file from another computer simultaneously.
How Bit Torrent works?
Let us see how Bit Torrent works with an example. A few people are seated in a room. Let us consider that all these people need a complete copy of all the pages in a book. Person A says that he has pages 1-15, 29, 36-40, 55, 74-89 and 94-100. Let us assume that these pages are not with persons B, C, D, E and F. Immediately they contact A and get a copy of all these pages. Now person B announces that he has pages 17-24,32,34,41-50,57,60-70 and 90-93. Then the rest of the persons will get copies of these pages from B.
Likewise all the persons announce the pages each of them have. Those who do not have a page they will get the page from the respective persons
Very soon, all the persons in the room will have all the pages of the book. In that group a person named ‘K’ will be present. He will have all pages of the book. You may ask why not all A,B,C,D and E get all pages for K directly. But if all of them connect to K at the same time then they can just be receivers not senders.
Instead, if A,B,C,D and E share pages from each other then they can be both senders and receivers.
Therefore if everyone needs everything then everyone should be both receivers and senders. This is exactly the method used by Bit Torrent.
K is called ‘Seed‘ in Bit Torrent.
What is special about Bit Torrent?
Generally, HTTP and FTP protocols in Internet use the client-server architecture. Here the client computer will just connect to the server computer. One client will not connect to another client. When many clients connect to the server the speed of the server will slow down. Both installation and usage of client-server is very easy.
Peer-to-peer method was introduced as an alternative to Client-server architecture. Grutella, eDonkey, Kazaa etc used peer-to-peer architecture. Whoever is connected to the network can send or receive files from any computer in the network. When a computer sends some files to another computer it functions as a server and when it receives a file from another computer it functions as a client.
Since a file can be shared between any file and not shared from a central server there is no way to track which files are being transferred. Therefore many started sharing illegal audio and video files using these peer-to-peer software. Peer to Peer software enables speedy transfer of files.
Bit Torrent method uses the best features of Peer-to-Peer and Client-server architectures. Computers get the different parts of a file from the ’seed’ and then the computers share these parts of the file from other computers and completes the file.
How to get Bit Torrent software?
Bit Torrent is an open source software. Many versions of Bit Torrent which can run on Windows, Linux, Unix or Mac are available.

The latest buzzword – Google Buzz
What is Google Buzz? Well it is definitely a threat to the likes of facebook and twitter.
As far as searching is concerned, Google is the defacto standard for internet users. But when it comes to social networking to keep in touch with friends and family, usually sites like facebook, myspace, twitter etc are used.
Google Buzz may change this. Google Buzz adds social networking functions such as the ability to share links, photos, videos and status updates with friends from GMAIL. So Google has finally extended the gmail users with the social networking tools to keep in touch with their contacts who are already in gmail.
Google Buzz is also accessible from smartphones. That makes it even more interesting. Though it is officially launched some gmail users still do not have buzz enabled for their account. As google is enabling buzz for gmail users in steps. So if you are a gmail user and you don’t have the BUZZ yet, not to worry. When it is avaiable you will automatically see it when you login.
3outube – Download youtube videos
Even wondered how to download youtube videos to your computer hard disk? If you did a search on google to find out free applications that can download youtube videos, there are quite a few of them available.
But some of them add advertisement, or only download 60 to 70 % of the video, and if you want to download the 100% video, you may have to buy it.

So the URL now becomes
http://www.3outube.com/watch?v=yY9793NCGxI
This will bring you to a page where you can select which file format you want to download. MPEG4 or FLA.
Just click on the file format you want and the youtube video will be downloaded to your hard disk. It is that simple.
TooManyTabs Firefox addon
Almost all browsers today use the tabbed browsing concept. So you only open a single browser but open multiple tabs each pointing to a different website. This is of course a good thing. But the more tabs you use, the more RAM memory the browser will be consuming.
At any point of time you can only view a single tab. However all the other tabs that are open are also consuming RAM memory. To solve this problem the TooManyTabs addon can be used in Firefox browsers. What it does is to create a waiting lounge where all unused tabs are parked. These parked tabs will appear as open but will be inactive. They will become active only when the tab is activated. This greatly reduces the RAM memory usage increasing the computer performance. This addon creates a toolbar just above the normal tabs. You can just drag and drop the tabs that you want to park, into this toolbar. Then when you want to reactivate the parked tab just drag and drop from this toolbar back to the normal tabs space.
Google Chrome is now ahead of Safari
Two weeks earlier Google launched the Google Chrome for the Mac and Linux platforms. After this the uptake of Google Chrome has increased quite extensively. Google Chrome has now taken the 3rd place in the Browser rankings overtaking Safari which was the third largest browser so far. IE and Firefox is still hold first and second place with 64% and 25% of the market share respectively.
For Chrome, this is an important milestone with 4.4% of the market share today. This is especially an accomplishment considering the fact that it is just one year since it was launched. It took five years for firefox to reach its 25%.
All online dictionaries in one
There are many online dictionaries available in the internet today. These online dictionaries on top of providing the meaning of the words, also provide synonyms and antonyms. Most people would like to check these individual online dictionaries one by one for the same word and compare the meanings to get a better understanding of the word.
There is a better option available to get the meanings provided by all these dictionaries in a single page using google. For example you want to find the meaning of the word ‘tips’, follow the below steps.
- Goto google.com in your browser
- type-> definition:tips and press enter
- google will return all the different definitions available for that word.
- In addition, google will let you choose different languages. You can choose different language to find the meaning in the chosen language.
- In additio google will show different phrases that can be used with that word. You can click them to find the meaning.
Is IE loosing the battle?

IE seems to be loosing the browser battle. There have been reports that show that IE’s rival browsers are gaining grounds.
A recent study done by Net Applications which involved over 40,000 websites and a lot of technologies in August and September 2009 showed the usage of different browsers in the internet. According to this study, the usage of IE has reduced from 67% to 65.7%. The usage firefox which was introduced five years ago has gained traction. Firefox users have increased from 23% to 23.8%. Apple’s Safari users have increased from 4.1% to 4.2%. Google Chrome users have increased from 2.8% to 3.2%. Opera users have increased from 2% to 2.2%. Do not think that this figure is too small. Considering the billions of total internet users this figure is too high.
Recently firefox released its 3.5 version which introduced many new features including faster java execution and built in vide. According to Microsoft even though the IE users are decreasing the IE8 users are increasing.
Movies time table in Google
Gone are the days when you need to ask people, read newspapers, look for posters etc to get to know which movies are screened in theatres in your area. If you want to know which movies are being screened in your area then you are just a click away. Yes Google is now providing this free service. Just goto http://google.com/movies .
By right, Google will guess your location using your IP address and show the movies in your area. However you can use the left pane to change the location to view movies in a particular city and country.
You can try any big or small city, you will be surprised to see the list of theatre names. movies and times in which these movies are screened. Isn’t this wonderful?
Firefox getting better

Firefox is continuously getting more and more users. Mozilla has announced more features in future versions of firefox. These changes will be done in two phases. In first phase the changes will be done in version 3.7 which will happen in the beginning of 2010.
Mozilla feels that the front page of the firefox browser is a bit dull. In line with the Vista style firefox broswer’s front page will be modified. Only two menu items with Page and Tools will be provided. Stop and reload buttons will be merged. Address bar and search bar will be merged into a single bar. Status bar will be removed. Some said that these changes were much in line with Google’s chrome browser. But Mozilla said firefox will always be unique.
Since all the browsers do the same thing, comparisons are inevitable. However there are always unique features in every browser. As of today, there are more users using firefox than users with IE 6.
The main reason for most users to switch to firefox was because of the complaint that IE 6 has issues with Adware and spyware. But a recent research done by Sensic shows that firefox browser is more prone to hackers than IE. According to this report, firefox is 44%, Safari is 35% and IE is 15% prone to hackers. Though the accuracy of this report is in question now, firefox’s plugins are still a question mark. The plugins are more prone to hackers.
Firefox version 3.7 is supposed to be released in early 2010 and version 4 is to be released roughly in a year from now. Hopefully all the problems will be solved and new features will be added in the newer versions.
Difference between Google Chrome OS and Chromium OS
Google Chrome OS is to Chromium OS what Google Chrome browser is to Chromium.
Chromium OS is the open source project, used primarily by developers, with code that is available for anyone to checkout, modify and build their own version with. Meanwhile, Google Chrome OS is the Google product that OEMs will ship on Netbooks next year.
Therefore Chromium OS is the source code released by Google which can be used by any developers to build and create their own OS. Chrome OS is a end product that will be released by Google and developed from this Chromium OS as the base.
A new keyboard for GMAIL

In Google’s Gmail website there are many short cut keys. But it is difficult to remember all these short cut keys. To solve this issue a new keyboard is now commercially available. This keyboard costs 19.99 USD.
There are 19 keys in this keyboard and looks like a number keypad. Each key represents a shortcut key. For example to mark a message with a star (favourites), or to initiate a search, to go inside the message threads etc can be achieved by just a click of a button. This keyboard can be connected to your laptop or PC via USB ports. There is no drivers required for this keyboard. You can just connect and start using it. But before you start using it, you will have to goto your Gmail account and enable the ‘Short cut keys’ in your settings.
This keyboard was not designed by Google. A film producer, Charlie Mason created this keyboard. If you already use shortcut keys in Gmail this could be a thing to consider. If you have not started using Gmail shortcut keys then this is the right time to try.

এবার Tools মেনু থেকে Febe/febe option/directory-তে যান।
